Sgt. Robert Miller USMC |
Uncle Bob
enlisted in the Marine Corp, January 25, 1943. He was a
member of the Cortland, NY Police Department, eventually
becoming Chief after the war. He was 32 years old when
he enlisted in Syracuse NY. I recall his late wife,
Lillian (my aunt) telling how all the young guys called
him "Pappy"
Bob was
married, with no children. Me and my two brothers were
very close to he and his wife. I
never heard Uncle Bob speak of the war. It was much
later when we realized he had kept a daily dairy during
the War in the Pacific
Only
recently, perhaps motivated by the HBO series, "War in
the Pacific" and being a history "buff" that I began my
research, and learned of my Uncle's 49 days aboard the
USS Virgo beginning June 3, 1944.
I hope
these brief "first hand accounts" of those days on the
Virgo, prior to the second invasion of Guam might prove
interesting to some Virgo veterans or their families
